basically XI adapter is used in case of ABAP and JAVA proxies.
From the help doc >>
<i>You configure the XI adapter to exchange messages with an Integration Engine. Both XI 3.0 and XI 2.0 message protocols are supported. You also use the XI adapter to exchange messages between SAP Exchange Infrastructure and the Partner Connectivity Kit (PCK).</i>

Between the Different XI systems we use proxies along with xi adapters (or) we use only XI adapters with out proxy concept?
and the other question is with out using proxys ,we can use XI adapters or not?
and what XI adapter is going to do? is it going to convert the data or not?
then which data it is taking as input and in to which format it is going to convert?
Hi Koteshwar,
<i>Between the Different XI systems we use proxies along with xi adapters (or) we use only XI adapters with out proxy concept?</i>
In my opinion, we have to use XI adapters in proxy scenatios only
<i>and the other question is with out using proxys ,we can use XI adapters or not?</i>
In my opinion, No
<i>and what XI adapter is going to do? is it going to convert the data or not?</i>
The use of adapter is to communicate the Integration Server with respective Applcation System. ie, R.3 or any SAP system which is configured as an Application System to the XI or between XI and PCK .
<i>then which data it is taking as input and in to which format it is going to convert? </i>
Integration engine in Application system is responsible for framing the XML msg that XI server can understand. In case of sender we may skip the use of XI adpater but in case of receiver, it is a must

Yes with proxies
and the other question is with out using proxys ,we can use XI adapters or not?
I think No
and what XI adapter is going to do? is it going to convert the data or not?
I helps to convert data from SAP to SAP and SAP to NonSAP transfer .
then which data it is taking as input and in to which format it is going to convert?
It takes the input as XML format and convert it to XML
You use XI adapters for both Java and ABAP proxies.

Bhavesh
