I have been having trouble with ABAP SQL statements timing-out but find it strange that the same selects using SE16 query is quick.
Even quicker than the same query from SQL query analizer...
What gives?

The query in se16 is compiled sql server level.
Try to use your query from one stored procedure. It will be faster.
