Hi Experts,
I have successfully installed the oracle software 11g of oracle ASM database and its been installed as per my previous oracle softwares with oracle:oinstall user and group.
Now I am installing the DB instance before that I am performing ASM preparation. As a part of that I have choseen the general options ->
oracle-> DB tools->
RAC/ASM/EXadata database isntance preparation ABAP - Kernel 7.4X ->
Database identification section given the new DB sid and selected the single instance on Oracle ASM ->
DB administration (OS User) password given ->
home directory somehow choosen as /home/orasid - but changed manually it to /home/oracle/ but we do not have any user called orasid in server. we have only oracle and sidadm of system.
we have started installing with root user but really wondering how it got it picked up orasid.
Apart from this in SWPM Sp08 there is one option to choose to install with orasid/oracle - so we can choose with oracle but in SWPM SP17 there is no option such like this.
We cant use SWPM SP08 as we need Kernel 7.4X which was not appearing in SWPM SP8.
Kindly suggest me here ?
Your kind help much appreciated.
Thanks
Pavan
Hi Pavan,
This maybe hard coded in the installation tools.
Can you please attach the sapinst.log, sapinst_dev.log?
By the way please also check whether there is higher swpm version than yours available. If there is, please try the latest one.
Best regards,
James

Hi James,
Thanks for your response. We gone through this step by changing the /home/oracle directory permission to 777.
Unfortunately some of the env variables are update with orasid:dba permission.
we are bit worried about other systems are already installed in this landscape. Does it contain any impact of the systems ?
We are planning to cahnge it old permissions once the db installation has been completed.
Kindly advice if you forcee any problems?
Thanks
Pavan
Thank you so much for your replies. We have started installation with SWPM SP8 and all problems are solved now.
Thanks a lot once again

Okay. In our scenario, we have already installed the oracle software with oracle user id. Now we are performing with ASM preparation with SWPM-root user id.
We wanted SWPM to provide us the option to perform the activity w with oracle user id which is not and automatically picked up orasid user. Due to this reason we got to change permissions of /oracle/home.
Now again I am confused, we should use root user id for ASM preparation and DB instance instillation. But SWPM has some issue

we have already installed the oracle software with oracle user id.
I guess you mean you have installed GRID software using oracle user.
Now you can try the same oracle user to install database software (using RUNINSTALLER and appropriate patches) beforehand the SWPM startup, and skip the prepiration step at all.
I prefere in your case to test that somewhere on empty system, but it should work well.
Loks like "preparation" and "DB refresh" only affected by the bug, at least it will be good in your case.
BR, Sergo.
2. As per my understanding, In the current blog Prithiviraj has mentioned to use oracle id for ASM preparation and DB installation - I am sorry if my understanding is wrong.
3. Do you have other databases on same host installed by oracle user? – yes there are other instance installed by oracle
When we faced same issue with SP17, we used the orasid user for installation, and after changed – Now we have used root user id, so are you recommending to use oracle user id ???
everything to oracle user again, followed standart procedure from SAP NOTE 1915317-Migrating Software owner to 'oracle' – as per my knowledge still oracle software directory with oracle:dba permission and haven’t performed the DB instance installation.
performed only ASM preparations.
Can you please suggest now.
Thanks
Pavan

You need to use root for SWPM, it stops on step "install database software" and after that
we used the orasid user to start the RUNINSTALLER, we tried even database installation
(RUNINSTALLER) by oracle user, but after continuing in SWPM it started to change permissions
back again to orasid:dba user on already installed sowtware.
So I assume there is some problem in SWPM itself.
P.S. we faced it when choosed the "DB refresh" menu option.
For common system copy procedure it went fine, but we did not use the prepiration at all.
Is it fresh DB installation you are trying to install, or system copy?

Hi Sergo.
Apologies I was by default logged with another user and asking for the question and relaised now so changed to my user id.
3) You started the preparation step in SWPM(started sapinst) using the root user, it is correct again.
4) SWPM didn't recognize you have used the oracle user (or you want to use it for DB as well) and tried to change everything to be used by the orasid user, this is the incorrect behaviour of SWPM/sapinst. - to answer this SWPM started with root user and as per our previous installation ( SWPM SP08) there was an option to check installat with oracle/orasid user but this option was not there in currently SWPM and by default it took orasid and changed env variables.
I have tried with latest SWPM SP17 PL 6 also still it is the same behaviour.
As per the blogs folks are suggesting to perform the ASM preparation check with oracle user id instead of root - is this correct ?
Thanks
Pavan

Hi Pavan,
1)
I have tried with latest SWPM SP17 PL 6 also still it is the same behaviour.
It is bad news.
2)
As per the blogs folks are suggesting to perform the ASM preparation check with oracle user id instead of root
Can you show me where directly?
3)
Now we have a doubt to proceed with installation of database. and it should not impact any existing databases.
Do you have other databases on same host installed by oracle user?
As you can see it already impacted changing the /home/oracle permissions, it can also change
the /oracle permissions as well.
When we faced same issue with SP17, we used the orasid user for installation, and after changed
everything to oracle user again, followed standart procedure from SAP NOTE 1915317-Migrating Software owner to 'oracle'

Hi Kaushik
I really appreciate your time and efforts here.
Thank you so much for your explanation. So far we were using root user id to perform the ASM preparation and DB instance installation but we understood we have to use oracle user id for both.
Can you please confirm is my understanding is correct.
Now coming back to revert the changes, we have performed only ASM preparation tasks as per http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/40f99657-82e2-3110-0ca8-99407e928... this document "Using SWPM on the Oracle Database Appliance"
We have chosen General options -> Oracle-DBTools-> AC/ASM/Database Instance Preparation ABAP Kernel 7.4x -> Selected single instance of oracle ASM and it is similar to the document and one of the screen selected automatically given Home directory as /home/orasid but cahnged to /home/oracle
As mentioned earlier got some permission issues and changed entire /home/oracle permission to 777 and completed the ASM Preparation.
Some of the env variables are got created from oracle to orasid. As you aware it was taken as a back up environment variable as .dbenv_hsotname.1.csh
Do we need to perform any steps to revert these changes or rename the newly created files to old n make the old files are new. Start the fresh ASM preparations with oracle user id beginning ?
Please give me the clear steps.
Thanks
Pavan

Guys, I see a lot of misunderstanding here
1) Thread was opened by Pavan Kumar but all other comments came from Wipro Onshore,
is there any special reason for it? If no, then better to use login you used to create this message.
2) Pavan wrote: "I have successfully installed the oracle software 11g of oracle ASM database"
How you have it done? Did you use the software disks from SAP for it? Let's assume you did.
You have used oracle:oinstall to install ASM instance, it is correct.
3) You started the prepiration step in SWPM(started sapinst) using the root user, it is correct again.
4) SWPM didn't recognize you have used the oracle user (or you want to use it for DB as well) and tried to change everything to be used by the orasid user, this is the incorrect behavior of SWPM/sapinst.
Open the question to SAP, and rize this question there.
Meanwhile, try to check, maybe they already issued new patch for SWPM, and try to use it.
BR, Sergo.
To answer your questions, 1 by 1,
how it got it picked up orasid:-
Generally whatever you set the database password, when accepted(Note:generally database password should not contain @ in between the password), that password remains stored in the table called SAPUSER, which the WorkProcesses retrieves to connect to the Underlying databse.
Does it contain any impact of the systems ?
As you have mentioned that you have manually changed, so while using the corresponding files of database, it might show error like not getting the data properly. For this matter, there is a helpful content in the below,

Thanks Prithvi.
I have gone throgh the notes.
let me explain you bit more clear, We have installed the oracle software with software owner which is oracle user id.
now the software permission is oracle : dba 11203
We are performing the ASM preparation check, for this started the SWPM SP17 tool with root user id and
general options ->
oracle-> DB tools->
RAC/ASM/EXadata database isntance preparation ABAP - Kernel 7.4X ->
Database identification section given the new DB sid and selected the single instance on Oracle ASM ->
DB administration (OS User) password given ->
home directory somehow choosen as /home/orasid - but changed manually it to /home/oracle/ and proceed with preparation.
Then we have recieved permission errors while progressing and changed /home/oracle permissions to 777 then completed the ASM preparation.
But now under /home/oracle directory some of the env varilables (ex .dbenv.sh) changed with orasid : dba instead of oracle: oinstall.
Now we have a doubt to proceed with installation of database. and it should not impact any existing databases.
ASM preparation has to be done with root id or oracle id ?
Can you please give your suggestion in detail.
Thanks
Pavan

Hi Pavan
User: oracle.

Hi Prithivi,
You mean we have to perform the ASM preparation with oracle user id instead of root user id ????
after this DB instance installation with which user id we have to perform ????
Now we have completed the preparation by changing the /home/oracle permission.
Can you please let us know how iwe revert the ASM preparation and start freshly ?
Thank you much for your replies so far.

Hi,
Any database related operation are recommended to be executed by the Database User-Id as that User has all the Admin-rights regarding database actions & activities.
For ASM acdtivities
Administering Oracle ASM Instances
For cleaning-up after removing

Hi , we have observed the same behavior with SWPM PL17,
looks like it is buggy one. Better to open OSS directly to SAP, maybe they have some fix for it already.

Hi Pavan,
Below is the extract from sap note 1524205 - Oracle 11.2.0: Database Software Installation https://launchpad.support.sap.com/#/notes/1524205/E
Oracle Software Owner
In SAP environments there are 2 possible Oracle software owners - 'oracle' or 'ora<dbsid>'. Which of them is used to install the Oracle database software depends on what kind of system is installed.
