Backup/Restore - consistent time

Hi

When you restore a Max DB database backup, will the database be consistent as at the time when the backup started?

After the downtime phase of a SUM upgrade (about 4 hours downtime), SUM prompts you to complete a data backup before you start the SAP system:

A backup of our Max DB database runs for 3.5 hours. If I start a database backup on this phase above, is it theoretically safe to start the SAP system and continue with the processing, as I will be able to restore the database to this time if required, using the mentioned backup made without rolling logs forward.  I'm taking a change but would like to minimize downtime of the SAP system.

Hi Alec,

Yes, the backup is consistent at the time when the backup was started no matter whether it is online or offline backup.

If the complete data backup is performed via online mode, then all the changes during backup will be recorded into log area, so this makes data is the same during online backup.

Best regards,
James
