if interested in knowing whats JWS technically...see this link
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/javaws/
its a popular technique to load Java based Rich client(thick client ) applications which has been effectively used in XI to work with the client tools i.e. IR & ID.
what is the role of java webstart in XI architecture?
--> Download and cache the necessary jar files for running IR and ID onto your local disk.
You need not download the jar files everytime as JWS checks every time if upgraded versions are available and if not cached versions are used.

Java Webstrat is a caching tool that caches some jar files from your XI server. You can install JDK1.4.2_11
