What is the System Landscape Data Supplier?

I built a new SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence 4.1 SP8 landscape today and noticed that Explorer had one more installation feature than normal.

Here is an old screen shot from BI 4.1 SP1.

And here is a new screen shot from BI 4.1 SP8.

I have a few questions.

  1. What is the System Landscape Data Supplier?
  2. Which was the first Explorer support pack that it appeared in (obviously > 1 and < 😎
  3. What are the implications for a distributed installation? Should it be installed on the Explorer server node, the web tier, any node in the BI landscape, etc.
  4. It appears that this feature was also added to the BI platform installer but may not get installed unless manually selected if applying a patch to BI 4.0. Can somebody elaborate?
  5. Could somebody update the SAP BusinessObjects Explorer Installation Guide and SAP BusinessObjects Explorer Administration Guide with details about this new feature?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Dallas,

The System Landscape Data Supplier (SLD Data Supplier) is only required if you are using SAP Solution Manager to manage your BI landscape.  I'll see if I can get the documentation team to put a note in the Explorer installation guide for this.

Cheers

Toby
