DELAY and DELAY_FU Events - Influence on TM process

Hello Guru's

I always struggle to understand what is the big picture behind these two events.

SAP always mentions these events can be further used to trigger planning to adjust delay's in transportation plan so that end customer is updated with new delivery dates, how all these works in combination with EM and TM.

Any document/Explanation would be helpful.
