SMP 3.0 System Generated Backup-Server Files

After support pack upgrades log files are generated in the SAP Mobile Platform home directory with the name backup-server-3.0.<support pack level>.<patch level>. We have no desire to keep the files if they serve no real purpose. Can anyone justify the need for keeping the files?

Those files are there created as a backup in case of problems during the upgrade so you can easily roll back.  After you have verified the new version is working as expected you can safely remove them.

I would like to know more about how the files are used to rollback in case of problems. What is the procedure for using the file to roll back?

It is a full copy of your server prior to upgrade.  If you need to rollback you can delete the new Server folder and just move the Server folder from the backup location back to the original location.

After replacing the new Server folder with the Server folder from the Backup-server-3.0 file is a SMP server restart required?

Any upgrade and/or rollback should be done with the server stopped since files will be in use otherwise.  So yes you will need to start the server after you replace the folder.

Thank you for the information. It is very helpful and greatly appreciated. The files are very large and we are limited on space on our servers.
