How to configure the multiple application servers for HANA database

Former Member

Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our SAP instance ECC EHP7 on HANA. Currently we have ECC EHP7 running on MaxDB database with 4 application servers. Central instance and MaxDB database on same physical server and application servers as below,

serverdb - Database and SAP application server (CI)

server1 - SAP application server -1

server2 - SAP application server -2

server3 - SAP application server -3

server4 - SAP application server -4 (dedicated background job server)

We are planning to use HANA appliance and we will have only HANA database running on HANA appliance. And for SAP application we will have separate servers as per our current environment.

I have one question as currently we have configured the central instance hostname in SAP logon pad for all users. And we have load balancing configured in our existing environment so users connect to any available SAP application server.

We want to configure similarly the SAP application servers in new HANA environment. Please can you let  me know the steps how we can configure the same so that we can have load balancing configured  and users can connect to any available SAP application server.

Thanks,

Narendra

Hello Narendra,

As you mentioned you're currently running in ECC EHP7 in MaxDB. What exactly would you like to upgrade (SP, Stack or EHP8). etc.,

If you would like to upgrade your running EHP7 system for ex: EHP8 and switch to HANA DB. You can use SUM (DMO) Database Migration Option: one step upgrade & Migration, Which will save your downtime and timelines.

For more information Please refer to following document:

Hope it helps if not please reply back with your comments:

Hi Raj,

Thanks for your reply...We will upgrade SP during migration.

So as you said we will use DMO tool for upgrade (ECC) and migration (Database).

It will be good if you can provide some steps or YouTube video link on how to use the tool to migrate MaxDB database to HANA. And also during migration we will have primary application server on other Linux servers and only HANA database on HANA appliance.

Thanks,

Narendra

Hi Narendra,

You will perform database migration from MaxDB to HANA, not ECC upgrade, right? If this is the case, you can use heterogeneous system copy export/import method. The primary application server and ASCS (called central instance before) are installed during migration. For additional application server (called dialog instance before), you can installed them later by using SWPM.

For load balancing logon, please configure logon group for server 1, server 2 and server 3 as server 4 is used only for background processing. For how to configure logon group, please refer to Configure and use logon group (ABAP) - Basis Corner - SCN Wiki

Hi Ning,

Thanks for your reply...I have some more questions as below,

And yes we are just going to perform database migration from MaxDB to HANA and not ECC upgrade as we are already meeting the pre-requisite of ECC version to have on HANA running i.e. we have ECC EHP7 running.

And also we will be having only database on HANA appliance and not primary application server that we will have on SUSE Linux servers.

So how with heterogeneous system copy export/import method we will be able to install primary application server on other Linux server and not on HANA appliance during migration?

Thanks,

Narendra

Hi Narendra,

For heterogeneous system copy, you export the source DB using SWPM firstly.

Secondly, assuming that the HANA appliance is ready, start SWPM on your new primary application server. It will let you input the HANA DB connection during installation.
