Hello,
We are planning to migrate our existing SAP systems from Azure to private cloud as homogeneous system copy.in this case , we are referring backup/restore method where there will be changes from HANA DB perspectives,
our source DB is multi tenant DB & target DB is single DB only..I have referred various online links , which points about converting DB etc , not upon restore details.
has anyone came across this situation and need more details upon this....will this be possible?
Thank You,
Rupali
Hi Rupali,
For homogeneous system copy with backup / restore method, you can't restore HANA from MDC to single DB.
You have to firstly convert the single DB to MDC and then preform the recovery.

Thank you Ning for your response. We are referring SAP OSS note # 1844468, whereby it suggests to perform recovery using SWPM tool.
In our case target DB is new instance and our requirement is to have it as single DB only..
Hence before starting with SWPM with system copy method , are you suggesting to get target DB (installing MDC DB itself) ready and then perform recovery?
do you have any supporting document indicating impossibility of restore from MDC to DB?
Thank You,
Rupali
Hi Rupali,
The words below comes from http://help.sap.com/hana/SAP_HANA_Multitenant_Database_Containers_en.pdf
-> 10 Backing Up and Recovering Multitenant Database Containers
A backup of an SAP HANA multitenant database container can only be recovered to an SAP HANA
multitenant database container. A backup of a tenant database can be recovered to a different SAP HANA multitenant database container, except with third-party tools.
Why not consider to using export/import method to perform the migration which ignores whether HANA is MDC or single DB?
Regards,
Ning
Thanks Ning for your quick response again. We are into preparation phase as of now.
that's good suggestion upon using export/import method and will have look into this.
need one more clarification, whether using export/import or backup/restore method. I believe using SWPM is proven option rather than recovering via HANA sudio etc....what do you suggest
Thanks again,
Rupali
Hi Rupali,
For backup/restore method, you have to convert your target single DB to MDC before recovery because the topology information is not compatible between single tenant database and the tenant of a multitenant database mentioned in note 2141670 - Backup & Restore from a single tenant database into one tenant of a multitenant database fails.
For export/import method, it uses the pure data which is independent of DBs and platforms.
Regarding to which method preferred, depend on you.
Because that you may need to do something at SAP application level (for example, reinstall application server during migration), using SWPM for recovery is suggested.
Regards,
Ning
