1...What is the differnce between FPT and NFS( in Trasport Protocol)

a) FTP - if your file are available via FTP then you use FTP

(over internet etc)

b) if your files are avaialble from XI in folders then you use NFS

Hi Rajesh,

1..Which is the best one ???

Performance wise there isnt much difference. The usage depends upon ur scenario

2..Assume If we have the file in the FTP

then is there any way to get it into our XI system and then Using NFS.

Need for such a scenario doesnt seem to be practical. FTP and NFS are optional things and u could use only one of them in a scenario until u go for a really complex configuration.

3..OR then we Should Use only FTP?????

If u have FTP, use FTP option only. No need to use NFS.

Hi Khanna,

We mostly use NFS when we require to poll the files from local machines..

Or in other words, any machine that is mounted on your SAP XI server can use the NFS protocol.

We use FTP when we require to poll the data from the FTP servers which are in the remote side or outside the firewall..

Also go through the below thread which discusses the same question u have....

Hi,

It is possible that the client's system is across ur network and the client is not ready to send u the file. At that time u have to use FTP.

In scenario where the XI system could store the file on their server (e.g. cases where the organization has their XI in place and they dont want to add an extra FTP server in their scenario, they can directly paste the file on the XI file system). In these cases NFS is used.

Data would come to u in any file format (e.g. .xml, .txt, .pdf). The format of data depends upon the file the sender wants to send

Hi Thanks for ur quick reply.

As u told

>>>>that the client's system is across ur network and the client is not ready to send u the file. At that time u have to use FTP.

This is ok.

Q:::::And For this We should be in the VPN OR No need?????/

In scenario where the XI system could store the file on their server (e.g. cases where the organization has their XI in place and they dont want to add an extra FTP server in their scenario, they can directly paste the file on the XI file system). In these cases NFS is used.

In this case u need to put the file in the XI Server, From where u wil get the file to keep it in the server(means via internet or by hand or like.....)

Please let me know all the details

Hi,

FTP is a client-server based protocol.

It is identical to that of e.g. UNIX ftp command.

e.g.You may not be able to open the folder path in a Windows Explorer view, if the files are kept on a UNIX machine, but you can FTP the server.

You need to have access parameters, as well as open connections to the server.

Any folder that has been shared can be used for NFS. It is less secure, as user credentials are not required to access it.

Whenever you want to secure access to you file-system to a limited no. of users, you should use NFS.

Puloma.
