Upgrade from NW 7.31 to NW 7.4

Hi,

We are upgrading our NW 7.31 ABAP to NW 7.4

We have successfully completed upgrade in some sandbox, training and dev systems. Now we are in the Q system which is clustered / distributed.

In Q system we also have secondary application servers, and in all other previous systems, there was no additional application server.

We have generated the stack file for the dev system and it has been modified and used for all other systems as well till now.

1) But as we have additional application servers in Q system, do we need to generate a new stack file for this Q system ?

2) If no, can we go ahead without entries for the application servers in the stack file ? How will it recognize these app servers during upgrade ?

3) Do we have to reinstall the secondary app servers after the upgrade ?

If anyone can help, please guide.

Hi Madhu,

1) But as we have additional application servers in Q system, do we need to generate a new stack file for this Q system ?

Ans : SAP never recommend to re-use the xml for other servers , But just with jugad we use to us e ,No need to generate the Additional XML.

2) If no, can we go ahead without entries for the application servers in the stack file ? How will it recognize these app servers during upgrade ?

Yes you can go ahead

3) Do we have to reinstall the secondary app servers after the upgrade ?

No need to reinstall , Most of the case secondry server will come up ,,,only at the most you need to upgrade kernel only ,but first try direct start .

agreed,

at the start of the upgrade, stop SAP on all Dialogue Instances / Additional Application Servers

Execute the Upgrade on the Central Instance

After the Upgrade, Start SAP on the Dialogue Instances / Additional Applications Servers and they will Sync with the CI and upgrade themselves, it will take some time for them to start since they will be upgrading their source files, you will see the new versions of the files arriving on the filesystem.

Start the Dialogue Instances one by one.

Hi Madhu,

AFAIK you don't need separate stack file for dialog instance. Also there is not need to re-install dialog instance after upgrade.

Hi Madhu.

You can follow the point number 3. before start upgrade uninstall the application server. Once upgrade completed then reinstall the new application based on the NW version.
