Hi Guys,

I need some clarification regarding the upgrade of kernel in sap Java Application servers .

Currently I have a central instance and 4 dialogue instances where 1 consists of database and the remaining systems are sap AS Java systems.

We are planning to upgrade the kernel to the latest path and I would like to know the following:

1) Once after the uncar of the path files are done Do we need to copy the files to

D:\usr\sap\SID\\exe

And

D:\usr\sap\SID\J00\exe

And

D:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64

Kindly let us know, so that we can proceed accordingly.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Khaushik,

You are doing Kernel upgrade on Java Windows system.

Please find the stets and proceed with the Kernel upgrade.

1.Stop the SAP/DB

2. Please take the backup of all existing Kernel exe dir on Java

3. Copy the latest Kernel path and extract it

4. Please check if your sapmnt  exe dir is common for CI and DI's

If it is common then you can only replace the kernel on CI( sapmnt exe dir) , if its not common

then you have to place the extracted kernels in CI and all DI's (in  sapmnt exe)

    ( D:\usr\sap\SID\exe--Yes

     And

     D:\usr\sap\SID\J00\exe--Yes

     And

     D:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64) --Yes

Check if  there is any central services SCS exits in your JAVA systems , if its there then take the back of        exe  and replace it.

5. Dialog instance also you have to replace the kernels in all exe folder where ever it's exits

FYI...

Kernel path should be same for CI and all DI"s. if it's not same then kernel syn will not happen for CI and DI's

6.Before starting check the disp+work , it will display the kernel version where we are.

7.start DB and SAP

If you are that worried do it via SUM. It will handle most of your doubts. However I do recommend you going thru the proper SAP Note for the kernel version you are planning to move to

Hi Kaushik,

Please follow below note for update the kernel.

19466 - Downloading SAP kernel patches

Procedure:

Copy uncar files to /sapmnt/<SID>/exe, /usr/sap/<SID>/JC<nn>/exe and /SDM/exe  and all application servers locations.

Rename  .old to  existing library files in existing kernel

For giving appropriate permissions to kernel files , logon to root user

Then run script => /sapmnt/<SID>/exe  saproot.sh  <SID>

Before starting the startsap , cleanipc <nr>  remove

startsap

Thanks & Regards,

Balaram

Hi Kaushik,

You should follow SAP note 19466, specially point 5 (Recommendations for applying kernel patches).

Hi Kaushik,

Update the kernel files in this location D:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64

Files to the location D:\usr\sap\SID\J00\exe should get copied during system startup using sapcpe process. If this does not work then manually copy the files to this location as well.
