SAP BO 4.1 and 4.2 installation on NAS or SAN

Former Member

We have a multi node setup for BO BI and we are planning to install 4.1 or 4.2 on NFS or iSCSI storage volume.

Mainly we want to put BO binary and FRS both on storage.

Abhishek Jain

After the installation of BI4 you will be able to change the FRS location.

SIA should be running with the Domain Account and this Account should have rights to the NAS location.

To change the FRS locaion:-

  1. Log on to Central Management Console (CMC).
  2. Click Servers.
  3. Double click the Input/Output File Repository Server and change the Temporary Directory and File Store Directory (Use the UNC path, e.g. \\boedb\FRS\Output\temp).
  4. Restart Input/Output File Repository Server.

This link will be helpful:-

Install BusinessObjects on a local drive since SAN/NAS installations are not supported. SAN/NAS drives can be used for storing Input and Output data though.

you cannot install BO on NAS. It is not supported. Raunak also mentioned in his post.

Hi Abhishek,

The architecture you are trying to establish is not supported by the SAP. Doing the install on the network drive is way more complicated and problematic.

Mainly the BI has two important part to run the server. CMS Database and filestore. Both can be placed on another server and on network location respectively. If you are planning for DR that even of the server fail your BI will work because it is installed on the Network so answer is IT WILL NOT.

Even though you managed to achieve this in case you will face any issue the support will check the basic stuff and if it is not supported then it will be a problem which we don't wanted for sure.

Below points may help you to decide the alternative of it :

  • Use the Database which is installed on another server and take regular backup of CMS DB.
  • Use the File store on network location and change the IFRS/OFRS properties as mentioned above by Raunak.
  • Even though you use multi nodes they will be sharing the same DB and Filestore so basically you need to preserve these two stuff only.
  • At any point all nodes will not fail and even in that case you can take fresh machine install the Exact BI and then point it to the CMS and Filestore by following necessary steps mentioned in the KBA 1275068 - Backup and restore BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.x / BI 4.x system from one environment to another environment [video]

Hope this will help.
