HANA backup - file system exclusion

Hi

Our HANA appliance file system backups are huge, and I notice the exclusion lists have not been setup.

I would like to confirm the best practice exclusion list, before I request implementation

We backup via Netbackup interface directly to tape.  I noted the HANA Data and Log locations from HANA Studio - Volumes - Storage.

Notes below with my comments:

/sapmnt/data/*   ?  this directory contains the open database data files – can be excluded from file system backup – this is included in the online full database backup

/sapmnt/log/*   ? this directory contains the open database logs        (logs are written from here directly to tape by Netbackup interface via log backups)

/sapmnt/shared  ? contains the database home – Important to be included in file system backup

/sapmnt/PH1 ? this contains the SAP installation - Important to be included in file system backup

My Question - Should the /sapmnt/log/* file system also be excluded from the file system backup?

I notice the log directory are huge:

jhbtfrlpsha01:/sapmnt/log # du -h *

53G     HP1/mnt00001/hdb00004

2.1G    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00002.00003

5.1G    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00003

49G     HP1/mnt00001/hdb00001

2.1G    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00002.00004

349G    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00003.00004

458G    HP1/mnt00001

(almost same size as datafile file system):

507G    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00004

938M    HP1/mnt00001/hdb00002.00003

Hello Willem,

Yes, the online redolog directory should be excluded during OS backup.

The backup of online redo log is done by offline redolog which may be transferred to your tape.
