Duration of Project Elements

Hi All

Case of requirement:

Task1 lasts for 0.5 days and the subsequent task2 takes another 0.5 days.  So the whole time frame of task1 and task2 is 1 day in total. But in the standard system the minimum time of each task's duration is 1 day. In this case task1 and task2 will take 2 days instead. And this will make the schedule of the project longer than the fact is.

Whether the duration of project elements can be set to decimal format or change the time unit from day to hour?

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

as far as I know it is not possible to use other units than 'day' for the field duration, as it is used by the scheduling framework.

The solution Judith recommends should aim at the field 'work', where you can define other units like 'consulting days' with 8 hours per day. Or for your example you can take 'hour'.

A possible solution could be, that you schedule both tasks with fixed constraints for the same day and maintain the field 'work' with 0,5 person days or 4 hours. e.g.

task 1:  must start 14.03.2016 || must end 14.03.2016 || work = 4 H

task 2:  must start 14.03.2016 || must end 14.03.2016 || work = 4 H

Relationship between task1 and task 2. Due to the manuell fixation with hard constraints the tasks will not be sequential on the GANTT, but parallel. This leads to the requirement, that the time frame must not exceed 1 day (duration). The work is 'split' with having 4 H for each task.

There is a unit in SAP-Standard: You can use 'PDA' as it reflects FTE (consulting days). Have a look to the transaction CUNI (dimension 'time'). You have to customize this time unit for your cPro (Basic Settings -> Define Time Units) and afterwards you have to maintain this time unit also for your project type (Structure -> Define Project Types).

Dear Jimmy,

it´s not possible to maintain a decimal value in the field "duration". You should use a smaller unit than

"day" to achieve your requirement - for example "hours".

Or you can also create your own "unit" which is defined in transaction CUNI for 0,5 day (12 hours). (As for example "consulting day" is defined with 8 hours per day.)

Best regards,

HI Judith

That could be a solution. Would you please show me more about the configuration as I can't find where to assign this defined time unit to project. In fact there is a path to configure time unit under Basic setting of project, but that's not the duration but the labor unit of resource assingned in project.
