The initial name of an attribute migrated via a relationship join is controlled by the Naming Conventions within Model Options. Once the attribute is created, you have to go to the entity or attribute properties to change it. Unfortunately, the Join tab doesn't provide a direct link to the attribute.
So, the answer to your question is that you can't edit the attribute name via the Join tab. It's possible that this has changed in PD 16.6, though I doubt it - I haven't seen PD 16.6 yet.
