SAP on Windows Issue

Former Member

Hello !

We're on Windows 2012 with SQL/HANA for our SAP systems.

We're running into a weird problem where sporadically the OS becomes

unresponsive.

As a result, SAP malfunctions/becomes unresponsive & we're not able to

RDP in to the server.

On hard rebooting, everything's Ok.

This is only happening to the SAP servers.

The non SAP servers in our landscape are Ok.

We're on Version 6.2 Build 9200.

When the OS freezes, SAP is still up most times...but things like

transports don't work (since OS files are inaccessible).

Also, SICK goes into the hourglass mode.

Event Viewer does not give any useful information.

Today we had an instance where our Production SCM system CI froze & we

had to reboot it.

Yesterday, it happened with our ECC Production Cluster server.

Since the sapmnt share was accessible (even though RDP was not), the

system did not go down...but in a few hours the server restarted itself

& failed over to Node 2.

We have a case open with Microsoft too...they've asked us to update the patches...but since the patches have to go in Dev-->QA & then Prod. this would take time.

We were wondering if maybe this is a known issue with a single bug fix or something else that addresses it.

Its also extremely sporadic & random...i.e. its one SAP server today & the other tomorrow...

We also have Symantec installed on all these servers.

Please help advise...

Thanks a lot !

saba.

As the issue affects different systems like ECC, SCM ...the likely cause of this could be an OS patch that was recently installed in these systems.

Discuss with the OS team & MS to identify the problematic patch and possible resolution.

Dear Saba,

Hope you are doing good.

I have seen such a behaviour when the CPU usage becomes high and the OS freezes cause there are lack of resources.

Can you check this aspect when the load is HIGH and do make sure that you have enough RAM on the  sever.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hemanth,

All well...thanks

That's the funny part !

This happens on servers where load is practically nil too !

Hence not sure what's causing the break...also, event viewer does not talk about any resource shortages.

Could this have something to do with the Diag. agent since that's installed on "all" SAP servers or some known issues with Symantec maybe ?

Thanks a ton !

Hi saba,

If you have SAPJVM, please go through the note 1783031 - Analyzing AS Java

performance with SAP JVM Profiler throughly and and run a prf trace when the performance is low.

As the note states, do take a couple of snapshots and attach the collected *.prf file.

This will help give a complete SYSTEM snapshot.

Thanks Hemanth.

But these are all pure ABAP systems

I have an OSS open too...

Thanks a lot.

If you are not able to logon via RDP I expect a malfunction of the operating system.

Possible reasons for that are mostly resource bottlenecks like Memory (phys RAM + Pagefile), network problems or IO problems on disks.

Please have a look at Windows Eventlog System+Application around the time the system was inresponsive.
