SAP HANA install fail: hdbpreprocessor HDB Preprocessor not running

Hi

I'm trying to do a SAP HANA (SPS10) install on Linux and I'm having a few difficulties. The installer (hdblcm) fails with:

Creating System...

  Starting SAP HANA Database system...

Starting 7 processes on host 'myhostname.com':

Starting on 'myhostname.com': hdbcompileserver, hdbdaemon, hdbindexserver, hdbnameserver, hdbpreprocessor, hdbwebdispatcher, hdbxsengine

Installation of SAP HANA system failed.

Installation of SAP HANA Database failed

    Installation failed

      error installing

          Cannot start system

Start instance 00 on local host failed.

FAIL: process hdbpreprocessor HDB Preprocessor not running

Check the log file for SAP HANA Database error messages

I can indeed see that the Preprocessor isn't running:

./sapcontrol -nr 00 -function GetProcessList

26.01.2014 00:55:46

GetProcessList

OK

name, description, dispstatus, textstatus, starttime, elapsedtime, pid

hdbdaemon, HDB Daemon, YELLOW, Initializing, 2014 01 26 00:44:17, 0:11:29, 8077

hdbcompileserver, HDB Compileserver, GREEN, Running, 2014 01 26 00:44:24, 0:11:22, 8159

hdbindexserver, HDB Indexserver, YELLOW, Scheduled, , , -1

hdbnameserver, HDB Nameserver, GREEN, Running, 2014 01 26 00:44:18, 0:11:28, 8095

hdbpreprocessor, HDB Preprocessor, RED, Stopped, , , -1

hdbwebdispatcher, HDB Web Dispatcher, YELLOW, Scheduled, , , -1

hdbxsengine, HDB XSEngine, YELLOW, Scheduled, , , -1

Question is, why?

Very little in the logs (/var/tmp/hdb_BOB_hdblcm_install_2014-01-26_01.58.03/hdblcm.log); can't see any errors as such - it just says the same about the preprocessor not running:

01:58:36.967 - INFO:     Output line 47: Installation failed

01:58:36.968 - INFO:     Output line 48:   error installing

01:58:36.968 - INFO:     Output line 49:     Cannot create Instance

running

01:58:36.968 - INFO:     Output line 53:         Check the log file for SAP HANA Database error messages

Further down there is one error:

Deployment of SAP Host Agent configurations failed on host 'myhostname.com': Invalid Credentials, SOAP-ENV:Server

??

It also mentions to check another log file: /var/tmp/hdb_BOB_hdblcm_install_2014-01-26_01.58.03/hdbinst.log

I checked through this and the only 'error' I can see is:

01:58:36.963 - INFO:       daemon_myhostname.com.30000.000.trc: [8569]{-1}[-1/-1] 2014-01-26 01:58:33

01:58:36.963 - INFO:       daemon_myhostname.com.30000.000.trc: [8569]{-1}[-1/-1] 2014-01-26 01:58:33

.551874 e Configuration    ConfigStoreManager.cpp(00693) : Configuration directory does not exist.

Not sure if that's relevant to this issue.

Any ideas? I previously had very specific error messages regarding missing libraries, have fixed all that and can't see any messsages about those any more... this seems very vague. Anywhere else I can look? I did check the trace files in /usr/sap/BOB/HDB00/myhostname.com/trace but couldn't see anything useful there, the only messages were in stderr2 which were:

Environment variable IQDIR16 must be set before using HDB configured with Extended Storage Server

Environment variable STREAMING_HOME  must be set before using HDB configured with Streaming Server

Environment variable SQLANY17 must be set before using HDB configured with Remote Data Sync server

Again, not sure that's at all related to the problem? But I can't really see any other issues...

Hi Ross,

Could you please update the steps and options you selected to install this HANA system.

There is one old SAP Note regarding HDB preprocessor not running but that is after the installation while you are getting error during installation.

1611456 - HANA 1.0 bserver "HDB Preprocessor" doesn't start after the installation

You are getting error for SAP Host Agent installation also so would like to check if all the options are correct.

Thanks,

MPS

Thanks for the replies... I checked 2166496, doesn't seem to be valid for my issue.

I also checked 1611456, which I actually found earlier, but dismissed, as this is for SUSE. I'm running a RHEL version. However, I checked and that library appears to be there:

[root@185-186 ~]# cd /usr/lib64

[root@185-186 lib64]# ll libst*

lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root     19 Jan 12 19:22 libstdc++.so.6 -> libstdc++.so.6.0.13

-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 989840 Jul 23  2015 libstdc++.so.6.0.13

Hi Ross,

By your selection it seems you are trying to install only Database Client. Is this correct?

Normally for HANA DB, I install server, client & studio Could you please select Server & Studio option also alongwith Client (1,3,7).

Also please provide your hostname 'myhostname.com' for below option. Don't leave it blank or default.

Enter Certificate Host Name For Host 'myhostname.com' [myhostname.com]:

Also it will be good if you uninstall and install again.

Please try this and update.

Thanks,

MPS

Apologies, I took the incorrect default option of '3' on that particular run - I had previously been choosing '1' for server. Originally I'd been using the GUI and chosen client and studio too, so I have now tried with 1,3,7 as suggested - unfortunately this makes no difference - the errors are exactly the same.

I replaced my real host name with 'myhostname' for security reasons. The Certificate Host Name was entered exactly the same as my host name.

I think I have no option but to uninstall/reinstall.

I was led to believe that there is no longer a 'hdbuninst' option (I believe this was removed in an earlier release of HANA) and indeed it doesn't exist in the HDB_LCM_LINUX_X86_64 directory.

I believe you are supposed to now run 'hdblcm –uninstall' - however, this doesn't appear to be a valid option! Showing with the help option:

hdblcm –uninstall -h

SAP HANA Lifecycle Management (hdblcm)

Help:  hdblcm --help [--action=install|update [--pass_through_help]] | --list_systems | --version

Usage: hdblcm [--action[=install|update]] [--batch] [--component_dirs=<path1>[,<path2>]...]

              [--component_medium=<dvd_path>] [--component_root=<path>] [--configfile=<filename>]

              [--dump_configfile_template=<filename>] [--remote_execution=saphostagent]

--action[=install|update]              Specifies the action to be performed [default value: 'exit']

--batch                        -b      Runs the program in batch mode using default values for unspecified parameters

  --component_dirs=<path1>[,<path2>]...  Component directories

--component_medium=<dvd_path>          Location of SAP HANA installation medium [default: --component_medium=/install/HANA]

--component_root=<path>                Directory including sub-directories to search for components

--configfile=<filename>                Reads parameters from the specified configuration file (parameters in command line

                                         take precedence)

--dump_configfile_template=<filename>  Creates a configuration file with default values

--help                         -h      Displays the help information

For extended help, use with the parameter '--action'

--list_systems                 -L      Shows installed SAP HANA systems

--remote_execution=saphostagent|ssh    Specifies the connectivity method for multiple host operations

                                         [default: --remote_execution=ssh]

--version                      -v      Displays the version of hdblcm

The environment variable 'HDB_INSTALLER_TRACE_FILE=<file>' enables the trace.

The environment variable 'HDBLCM_LOGDIR_COPY=<target_dir>' creates a copy of the log directory.

Also manually running hdblcm or hdblcmgui brings up no uninstall option.

HOWEVER: I have now found hdbuninst in the HDB_SERVER_LINUX_X86_64 folder so will try an uninstall with this now.

Hi Ross,

Yes, please uninstall everything and install again either using GUI or Command prompt but remember to opt all 3 options (Server,Client & Studio) together.

Thanks,

MPS

I did an uninstall and tried again, same problem. Cleaned up another time and even tried a different SID and system ID, exactly the same problem.

I need to apologise at this stage if I've mislead you into thinking this was an install on Red Hat (as per my earlier comments) - what I meant was that it's not SuSe (in terms of a SAP Note that was suggested), and it was BASED on Red Hat - I'm actually running CentOS.... yes I know SAP do not support CentOs, but to all extents and purposes it's the same thing as RHEL, just missing some packages - which I believe I now have. I don't believe that the errors I'm getting are related to this... but perhaps they are? Perhaps there's something missing?

P.S. Note that this is only a test system and not Production, so support from SAP isn't required

Hi Ross,

Correct..SAP HANA is not supported on CentOS but I found below links for RPMs required for SAP HANA on CentOS

RPM CentOS 6 tuned-profiles-sap-hana 0.2.19 noarch rpm

Also there are prelim checks during install of HANA. Maybe you are getting errors because those conditions are not met.

Thanks,

MPS

Thanks Manish... I already obtained/installed the RPM earlier though.

Is there a way to disable the prelim checks?

Hi Ross,

What is the version of support agent. Have you given the correct credentials for almost agent.

How do I check the version? All I am doing is an install via the hdblcm command line. This is HANA SPS10.

Where do I 'give the correct credentials'? This is occurring during the install, with the root user...
