Using SWPM to do a system copy of NW7.0 (EHP1) - DB and Kernel media?

Hi all

I need a little clarification please using Software Provisioning Manager (SPM/SWPM).

I've downloaded the relevant version (70SWPM) but I'm struggling to work out where to get the correct Oracle RDBMS and kernel media from.

I'm actually building a system from a DB export. So we'll be building a new system using SWPM and using the export dump file for the DB import.

The source system is ECC 6 (EHP4) on Netweaver 7.0 (EHP1), SAP kernel 720 (patch 700), Oracle 11.2.0.4, on RHEL Linux 6.4.

So the target system I'm building needs to be the same (homogeneous system copy).

But if I look in the SAP Download Centre for "Netweaver 7.0 including EHP1" then the Oracle version there is 10.2.0 and the kernel is 7.00. I guess these were what the source system was originally built at but have since been upgraded/patched.

My question is, do I:

1) Download the 10.2 RDBMS and 7.00 Kernel, use SPWM to build/import/copy the system, then do an Oracle upgrade and kernel upgrade

or

2) Instead find the 11.2 RDBMS and 7.20 kernel and point SPWM at them to build the system on the correct level?

I'm leaning towards the second option but then the question is - where do I find the correct media on SWDC? Also, SAP OSS Note "1680045 - Release Note for Software Provisioning Manager 1.0 SP09" seems to imply (under 'Kernal Media') that I should use the version that came with the original - I think - it's not very clear!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ross

Hi Ross.

I think you may require to upgrade the kernel from 7.20 to 7.21 Ext on your source system, Refer the SAP Note 1713986 - Installation of kernel 721 (EXT) and start use the SWPM as mention in the SAP Note 1680045.

Before upgrade the kernel refer the SAP system copy guide from following link(require the SAP S-user id)

Hi

Why would I need to do anything with the source system / upgrade that?

Besides - I don't have access to the source system.

The export is being provided to us from a 3rd party company.

I've already read through all the install guides, the SWPM guide, note 1680045 etc - they do not contain the answers.

The question is which kernel (and Oracle version) media do I use to build the TARGET system - I have no control over the source system.

Thanks

Ross

Hi Ross.

In your case you can follow the option number 2 on target system.

Hi Ross,

You can use Kernel release/patch level which is equivalent or higher than your Source System.

Regarding Database you have to download same release Media (In your case 11.2.0.4).

So how do I find the relevant Oracle media?

I tried some newer NW releases...

Under Netweaver 7.3 the available Oracle RDBMS media is 11.2.0.3

-we need 11.2.0.4

So... I checked under Netweaver 7.4 - and the available Oracle RDBMS media is 12.1!!

Similarly, not so easy to find the kernel media...

Hi Ross,

You can download Oracle directly from Database option under Software Downloads. There 11.2.0.2, 11.2.0.3 & 11.2.0.4 media files are available. No need to check under SAP Component or Release.

Kernel you can download from any old SAP Netweaver release. I checked under SAP Netweaver EHP3 for 7.0 and there under Kernel I was able to see 721 and 721_EXT. Since 720 Kernel is obsolete so you can use 721.

Thanks,

MPS

Thanks - I've just found the software:

Under Databases->Oracle (rather than Installations and upgrades)

Oracle -> Database -> ORACLE 64-BIT -> ORACLE 11.2 64-BIT

ORACLE 11.2 64-BIT (Installations and Upgrades)

ORACLE 11.2 64-BIT -> Linux -> ORACLE Database

Oracle 11.2.0.4 RDBMS Linux on x86_64 64bit 1/6  Info  976563 24.02.2014

51047701_1.EXE

Oracle 11.2.0.4 RDBMS Linux on x86_64 64bit 2/6  Info  976563 24.02.2014

etc.

I happened to find the 7.20 kernel under NW7 EHP3:

Installations and Upgrades - N -> SAP NETWEAVER -> SAP EHP3 FOR SAP NETWEAVER 7.0

51041987_8 NW703 UC-Kernel 720_EXT Linux on x86_64 64bit

I see your point about 7.20 being obsolete... and I can see that 7.21 is actually included under the SWPM section for our release (NW7 EHP1):

Installations and Upgrades - N -> SAP NETWEAVER -> SAP NETWEAVER 7.0 -> Kernel for installation/SWPM - SAP KERNEL 7.21 64-BIT

UNICODE -> Linux

51049976_4 721 UC Kernel for SWPM SP9 - Linux on X86_64

However, the source system was on 7.20... won't changing to 7.21 be an issue? Will any additional steps be required?

Hi Ross,

Please check SAP Note 1680045 - Release Note for Software Provisioning Manager 1.0 SP09.

As per this note if you use Kernel Media available under Installation Package of your Release then it shouldn't be issue.

RIGHT... I'd read that note, but the statement below hadn't made much sense to me because I hadn't seen ANY kernel media for my installation version - but I have since found it under a SWPM section, not Installation:

Kernel Media

CAUTION: New Kernel / Java media has been added to the originally delivered installation packages for products supported by SWPM. If the new "SWPM Kernel/Java media" is available in software distribution center for your product, the installation / copy of that product is supported only by using the new media.

That now makes sense.

So I use 7.21!

Thanks everyone!

SAP don't exactly make it clear, do they? 😜
