MDG average implementation cycle

Hi experts,

Our company want to implement SAP ERP and SAP MDG at the same time. So i've got several questions:

  1. What is the average implementation time for SAP MDG?
  2. How many consultants i'll need to implement out-off-the box solution for all MDG areas (financials, suppliers, vendors, materials, assets)?
  3. If we are implementing SAP ERP and SAP MDG at the same time, in which system we should migrate our data from previous legacy system?

Thank you.

Hi Alexandra,

1. What is the average implementation time for SAP MDG?

Implementation efforts vary. The activation and test of the standard (out-of-the-box) MDG applications in a single development environment can be achieved in a relatively short timeframe - ~5-10 days.

A recommended starting point for sizing a baseline implementation (pilot or technical go-live) of MDG is the RDS for Master Data governance. The RDS package has well defined (configuration) build blocks or scope options.

A guideline for an RDS deployment is ~16-20 weeks assuming the standard RDS pre-defined scope options. Details on the RDS can be found in Service Market Place -> (http://service.sap.com/rds-mdgca)

You may also need to scale your baseline implementation depending on actual business requirements scope. For example, additional work-packages (effort) might be considered for:

  • Data model and UI extensions
  • Custom validation/derivation rules
  • Integration - Initial/delta data loading
  • Security role & authorizations
  • System administration

Additional work-packages should be assessed in detail on a project by project basis.

2. How many consultants i'll need to implement out-off-the box solution for all MDG areas (financials, suppliers, vendors, materials, assets)?

The RDS for MDG recommends a core team of 3 consultants with the following profiles (per domain):

  • Project Manager (or alternatively Solution Architect)
  • Business Process Consultant (SAP MDG Application Consultant)
  • Technical Consultant (ABAP/Integration)

Depending on additional scope/work-packages you may need to include profiles such as:

  • Technical Consultant (integration)
  • Technical Consultant (ABAP)
  • Technology Consultant (System Admin & Security)

Data migration/cleansing efforts and resources should be scoped in addition where applicable.

3. If we are implementing SAP ERP and SAP MDG at the same time, in which system we should migrate our data from previous legacy system?

If MDG is co-deployed with a transactional ERP system then your initial loading of master data is generally assumed as part of the ERP implementation.

If you choose to deploy MDG as a standalone master data hub then you need to consider the loading of master data to the MDG hub.

There is an exception – for MDG-F, in the case of both deployment options, you need to consider initial loading of financial master data objects.
