Hi MDM Experts
I have a few questions about SAP MDM adoption in the market. Inferences from your personal experience would help (I have already done enough searches on the websites). This would help the MDM community in understanding the direction this new concept is headed
What are some of the live implementations that have taken place (your personal experience); what was the methodology adopted & time frames for completion.
What are the popular master data & or scenarios that is brought under MDM - Vendor/Material/Customer/Products/Article
What industry types are seen increasingly adopting MDM - any trends like Auto/Retail/CPG/Pharmaceuticals/etc
What is the popular approach - Proof of concept/Prototyping/Phase wise implementation/Big bang approach
Any pointers or any inferences would help.
Thanks in Advance

Hi Rehman,
Many companies have implemented SAP MDM and planning to implement SAP MDM. So it is considered as a developing technology. Also many companies are not aware of MDM.
I have worked on three implementation projects I am sharing my experience for you.
(Due to company policies I cant disclose the project and approach details)
What are some of the live implementations that have taken place (your personal experience); what was the methodology adopted & time frames for completion.
SAP MDM Data Enrichment Service Implementation, SAP SRM-MDM Catalog Implementation and MDM Implementation for banking clients are the projects I have worked for.
Methodology: Each company has their own implementation methodology. It has been defined based on their experience and solution approach.
Time frame: Time frame depends on the system landscape, data size, Data model complexity. The time line varies from 2 weeks to several years.
What are the popular master data & or scenarios that is brought under MDM - Vendor/Material/Customer/Products/Article
I have worked on Material master, Customer master, Product master and Business partner. From my experience and from forum knowledge I can say the popular scenarios would be Material master and Business Partner.
What industry types are seen increasingly adopting MDM - any trends like Auto/Retail/CPG/Pharmaceuticals/etc
SAP MDM can be implemented for any enterprise. The focus area is their needs. Say a bank may require SAP MDM for its procurement process or an automobile industry may require SAP MDM for its business partner maintenance.
What is the popular approach - Proof of concept/Prototyping/Phase wise implementation/Big bang approach
Above all, for initial start you can proceed with Case studies on real time implementation either specific to the client's need or specific to the technology.
Hope this sharing helped you.
Thanks,

Hi Siva,
Please find the basic details below.
SAP NetWeaver MDM features the following capabilities:
Data Extraction: Extract master data on a logical object level from a client system
Data Transformation: Transform structure and content (values) during import and syndication of master data
Data Cleansing: Normalize and standardize information
Data Enrichment: Complement data to achieve complete and meaningful master data (for example, using 3rd party services)
De-Duplication: Match and merge objects to eliminate ambiguous and redundant data
Key Mapping: Provide cross-system identification to ensure enterprise-wide data quality
Data Validation: Ensure compliance according to defined criteria
Data Modeling: Provide the environment for creating and extending data models for object repositories
Data Distribution Distribute centrally consolidated master data on object level to client systems with delta handling
Publishing: Enable multi-channel publishing (for example, publish product data in printed catalogs or Web catalogs).
cleansing - Removing the non useful or very common things like Corp , AB , GMBH , comma , dots , etc .
duplication - If two records matches on certain parameters like name , address , VAT no , then merge them . These 2 records can be of diff systems or sometimes from same system as well .
key mapping - Source System is in the key to identify and also in harmonisation .
data validation - Forcing certain things to be added exclusively ( quite important ) .
Key Things will be used among these are :
Data Extraction , Data Transformation, Data Cleansing , De-Duplication , Key Mapping, Data Validation, Data Distribution
Key Topics are Consolidation , Harmonisation and Central Data Management .
Key things of MDM are MDM Console , MDM Import manager , MDM DataManager , MDM Syndicator .
