OS/ DB Migration From 2003 server to 2012 server

Hi All

We have a client who's using Windows 2003 server with EHP 4 -ERP 6, Database (IBM) DB2 6_81 version.

client requirement is need to upgrade the 2003 server to 2012, with same SAP level and Database.

How shall we do the process

Taking backup and restore method is fine but we had some doubts

1.DB2 6 version is not supported to windows 2012 server when we check in PAM. so whether we need to upgrade DB2 to latest version?

2.Client need re-installation on same machine so that, shall we move to this process stop SAP and DB . Insert OS CD and upgrade OS alone to 2012 server. whether this process will work out and whether DB will support?

3. when we have check in we got some points to migrate from 2003 windows to 2012 . once taken full backup we have to install windows 2008 restore the back up and again take full backup with windows 2008 and the install 2012 server os then restore the data.

whether which method is recommend 2 and 3 one.

if i go for 3rd one whether need to buy license for 2008 server then for 2012 server.

Can some you guys help us regrading this

Dear Williams,

1.DB2 6 version is not supported to windows 2012 server when we check in PAM. so whether we need to upgrade DB2 to latest version?

You have to upgrade the DB2 6 version to the supported version for 2012 server. If you are using DB2 10.1 then backup and restore method will not work. To perform backup/Restore method ,You need to choose intermediate version between 6 and 10 then you can perform the backup/restore method.

For example

DB 6 ----> DB 8 ---> DB 10 (backup/restore method)

The best option will be Export/Import method.

2.Client need re-installation on same machine so that, shall we move to this process stop SAP and DB . Insert OS CD and upgrade OS alone to 2012 server. whether this process will work out and whether DB will support?

- Take the export of database through sapinst method.

- Keep the exported file , to the secure location.

- Rebuild the system and perform the import.

But As per the SAP recommendation , you need to keep the source system for atleast 3 months prior to go live of newly migrated system. So build you new target machine and keep the source system without any production operation.

3. when we have check in we got some points to migrate from 2003 windows to 2012 . once taken full backup we have to install windows 2008 restore the back up and again take full backup with windows 2008 and the install 2012 server os then restore the data.

whether which method is recommend 2 and 3 one.

-  You need to build the target system with window server 2012.

- Take the export of database through SWPM

- Move the folders to the target system

- Import the export through SWPM.

So follow the export/import process , which will be easy and wont cost the license.

HI Ashutosh ,

Thanks for you reply

client having BI system too, so we had a plan to install  DB2 10.5 version

1. when we check in PAM . lowest version supported by SAP is DB2 9.7 version with EHP 4 ERP 6 and  2012 server . when explain to client they told need the latest version and also advantage of latest version . for this how can we move next

2. once install the 2012 server and DB2 10.5 version, if we import the file which we have already export with DB2 version 6 using SWPM tool. whether it will work ?

or else as you told DB2 version 6 -> DB2 version 9.7 -> DB2 Version 10.5 we have to do.

Can you suggest as

Hi Williams,

You need to follow the below steps.

- You need to check the database version supported for ERP and SAP Netweaver version(BI) in PAM

- Then you need to check whether OS support the SAP system and database in PAM

- Then you can chalk out the plan for the database version upgrade or window system upgrade accordingly.

1. when we check in PAM . lowest version supported by SAP is DB2 9.7 version with EHP 4 ERP 6 and  2012 server . when explain to client they told need the latest version and also advantage of latest version . for this how can we move next

Perform export of source system and import it to the target system.

2. once install the 2012 server and DB2 10.5 version, if we import the file which we have already export with DB2 version 6 using SWPM tool. whether it will work ?

It has to work hopefully , otherwise heterogeneous system copy would not have been possible
