ODATA is protocol ,its open standard protocol.
Open Data Protocol (OData) allows creating and consumption of Rest APS in a simple and standard way.
From Sap perspective, In Netweaver gateway using SEGW transaction we create services and publish them using ODATA.
And in frond end UI5 or Fiori can consume the same.
With respect to PI we have ODATA adapter to consume services.
