Database consistency check

Dear experts,

My Env is- Aix+Sybase. Backup device is tape. i need to take back-up daily so there is scheduler is set for the same.take backup of transactions hourly.

now issue is that  previously the size of my back-up .dmp(PRD sys) file was approx 55GB but all of sudden it reduced to 52 gb from last five days so i was scared if there would any data-loss..for that i just restored it on Test server and run dbcc checkdb.it took too much time i had to hault that after 6 hrs.
Both system is functioning properly no compalints from user and functional consultanats till date.

is there anyway to check DB intergrity..easily
Pl help

Hi Sharad,

I have zero knowledge on SYBASE database, but than why are you performing consistency check?

Consistency operation is only when you perform refresh activity or you find any database corruption.

and yes this operation is time consuming and consumes lot of resources.

Backup image size with mostly depend upon your database size, for any live system we have insert/update/delete operations performed on database this increases/decreases database size which in return will have effect on your backup image size.

Prithviraj.

Hi,

May be this thread can help..

unable to take backup in sybase with dump command | SCN

hope this helps clear doubt

agreed ..obviously back-up size depends on DB size ...thats why i am scared ...what happened to DB so its .dmp file reduced to its size by almost upto 3 GB..and its compressed...so in case of data loss think how much data we ve lost..

although more than 3 weeks have been passed ...restored it on TEST ...didnt get any complaint from Functional guys or from users..what I have done is only incomplete DBCC ....so i want o clear my doubt of data loss

Hi Sharad,

3GB data loss... what made you think that data is lost here? Just because the backup size has reduced to a size does not (or will never mean) there is data loss.

If backup is running with same set of tables/tablespace (or entire database) and is completing successfully, you need not worry about size.

Thanks Mandeep...but my doubt is still not resolved...how could a bckup size of DB reduced suddenly...dbcc is the way to check consistency ...okay..if i execute it again it gonna take a load of time....isnt there nay other way to check DB consistency in better way and could find what happened exactly....

Thanx in advance

Hi Sharad,

I believe you're over working on this.

As far as I know we cannot control over Backup image size, it will be what it can be depending on what all is backup and what DB size is.

Anyway, you can work towards compressing the backup image and other things..

i used DBBC checkdb command ...but unfortunately i had to stop it in middle...due to time consumption .
could it make any impact.

Hello Sharad Kumar:

Cancelling DBCC check should not impact your DB consistency.  While executing your DB checks you have to be patient as it is a time consuming process as everyone here has already mentioned.

thanks.

Former Member ..thanks for response
i want to just confirm no data loss made...all of sudden 4 GB cant be reduced over a night...means it decreased by almost 7.8%...isnt it strange??
and i am unable to get output in DB12....
is there anyway to ensure its consistency and integrity.. at SAP Level??.

Hi,

I still find it difficult to relate consistency check and backup image size relationship.

Anyway, go through below mentioned sap note

Hi Sharad.

On your production system have you carry out any database management (Any deletion)? or Everyday have you check the transaction log size? you can check over all the database size using the transaction DB02 space history.
