This is an old, recurring topic. While we know that there is no support for the new ABAP editor in the Java SAP GUI, I would be interested to know what it would take to add this support.
Is it technically feasible? How many developers would have to show interest for the Java SAP GUI development team to add this support?
Hello Martin,
This is a limitation in the JavaGUI - see notes
http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/454939 and

For any requests for feature updates, refer to note 11

Hello Jude,
Thank you for the information on the various programs and options for engaging with SAP on innovation.
However, it seems to me that all these options are limited to customers. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I want to know how we, as a developer community, not customers, are able to engage with SAP and leverage our collective voice to influence SAP's direction in products.
Thanks and Regards,
Martin
Hello Martin,
There are no plans for an ABAP source editor running in-place in SAP GUI for Java.
But what about using ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse (see ABAP in Eclipse)?
Best regards
Rolf-Martin

Hello Rolf-Martin,
Thanks for the reply.
The problem with the Eclipse ADT is that you are still dependent on the SAP GUI for tasks like editing dictionary objects anyway. It would be nice to have a solution like SAP GUI with a decent editor for ABAP that you can run on Linux. (I have heard of at least one person running the Windows SAP GUI successfully under Wine, but my attempts at this have not worked).
However, I would be interested to know (even though I understand it is not planned) whether it is technically feasible to do this. Also, if enough developers showed interest, would it sway SAP's opinion in perhaps planning support for this after all?
Thanks and Regards,
Martin
Not sure how it works on Linux, but I run Eclipse + Java GUI on a Mac and it works really well. I also run Windows under VMWare and updated it to Win10 ages ago and still haven't bothered installing SapGUI.
e.g. If I want to open a dictionary object I press F3 and it opens in a Java-GUI session in a new Eclipse tab. All completely seamless.
If that doesn't work for you, maybe all that's needed (either on your setup or in context of SAP/Linux support) would be to get the GUI and Eclipse working together?
Personally I miss some of the SapGUI features, but Eclipse has a good few other useful features that make up for it. And at the moment theres a heck of a rate at which ADT is currently gaining new features, I think SAP have recruited a small army of developers to just work on ADT.
