Dear community,
I am trying to use SUM SP14 and facing with stupid questions how to use this tool.
I have successfully applied Java SPStack with SUM and now I need to apply another patch but I don't understand how to return to the "Welcome screen".
Do I need to delete SUM directory and unpack SUM.sar again?
But if I try to delete/rename SUM folder MS warning message appears "Folder is open in another program..." So how to stop SUM processes? In SUM guide there is information about stoning Software Update Manager via Task Manager, but I can't see SAPup processes in Task Manager.
Regards,
Anatolii
Hi Anatolii,
This is a Windows server? Do you still have a command prompt session open on the console that is running the SUM process? If so, you should be able to login to SUM via a web browser (http://<host>:4239), and in there you can find menu options to gracefully stop the SUM process. Otherwise, you can probably just close the command prompt.
In prior patch levels of SUM it was definitely true that you had to delete (or archive off) the used SUM directory and unpack the CAR file again to start fresh. I believe in the latest patches there is a way to "re-initialize" the existing SUM installation to start over, but to do that you would need to be able to login to the browser interface. However, if you are able to get all the processes stopped and delete the folder, you can always unpack it again to start over -- bit of a hammer approach, but it works.
You are right that you can't just return to the welcome screen in your "used" SUM session to do another activity without re-initializing SUM.
Cheers,
Matt

Hello Matt,
Thank you for answering.
I faced with problems because I used command to start SUM:
<DRIVE>:\<update directory>\STARTUP.BAT confighostagent
And url for accessing SUM:
http://<hostname>:1128/lmsl/sumjava/<SID>/index.html
This information I have found in Update Guide for SUM 1.0 SP14
Now I use
<DRIVE>:\<update directory>\STARTUP.BAT
http://<host>:4239
and it works fine.
Hello Anatoliy,
thanks to Matt you found a solution.
Let me explain that starting the SUM as described in the documentation is the new approach, using the SL UI. To start from scratch, you will have to end the running SUM Java process the hard way: kill the java process that was originated from with in the SUM folder (windows: use Task Manager; linux: ps -ef | grep java).
[Let me add that the command "STARTUP confighostagent" registers the SUM for the SAP Host Agent, but does not start the SUM process itself. This happens afterwards when you use the URL towards SAP Host Agent, which in turn will start the SUM process]
Using the former UI (sdt) may still work, but should be the exception.
Kind regards, Boris
Hello Boris,
Thank you for detail explanation.
Now I understand why SUM stays available via http://<hostname>:1128 after I restarted OS where It's running.

Anatolii
