Hi,
SLD: System Landscap Directory
The System Landscape Directory of SAP NetWeaver (SLD) serves as a central information repository for your system landscape. A system landscape consists of a number of hardware and software components that depend on each other with regard to installation, software updates, and demands on interfaces.
Check the documentation here

Hi Sireesha,
In simple words:
System Landscape Directory is a place where all the information needed for the development is stored. Let us take the case of Java Web Dynpro development.
So the first time the user should point his IDE to the correct SLD and import the correct development configuration to get access to all the required libraries needed for his/her development. There will be many development configuation (tracks) pointing to different versions of binaries that we need and the user is required to select the correct developement track.
This tracks can hold links to ur latest binaries, version control system, central build system etc etc. So basically SLD is the backbone which contains all the development infrastructure information.
See the link <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005vp/helpdata/en/31/f0ff69551e4f259fdad799a229363e/frameset.htm">SLD</a>
for more details.
Regards,
Sudeep
