pgrade 46C system to ERP 6.0 EHP6 (Oracle/Windows) including Unicode conversion

Dear Friends,

We are going to upgrade a 46C NUC system to ERP 6.0 EHP6 or EHP8 (running on Oracle 10g & Windows 2003).

We will need also to combine the upgrade with an Unicode conversion.

Target system will be a SAP ERP 6.0 EHP 6 or 8 Unicode system running on Windows 2008 R2 with Oracle 12C.

We are going first to create a sandbox system using a copy of our production system to determine the upgrade/migration path and to estimate workload and complexity.

Regarding this test, I have a question:

- Because it's a sandbox and developers are busy on other projects, we don't want to adapt ABAP Programs to comply with Unicode restrictions. Do you think that we will be able to continue the migration process and to upgrade system to target release?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Zobair

Hello Zobair,

As Michael has pointed out, it's not mandatory. He has also pointed out running UCCHECK to get a feel for the development workload. Don't underestimate the development workload as my experience with CU&UC shows that time and time again it's one area customers underestimate(depending on number of Z* objects).

Also bear in mind that if your existing system is MDMP that will also add to your workload with all the vocabulary scans (SPUM4).

Hi Zobair,

please note that in case your target system is based on ERP 6.0 EhP8, it is not possible to combine the upgrade with the Unicode conversion. Please have a look at SAP note 1322715 point 6.

Regarding your question: The Unicode conversion is possible without adaptation, but objects which do not comply with the new Unicode syntax rules do not work in the Unicode system.

In terms of my knowledge it is recommended but not a mandatory prerequisite to make ABAP-programs unicode compatibel before conversion.

However transaction UCCHECK will help you to get a feeling how many programs potential would be affected.
