Installing Personas 3.0 SP1 - Risk of impact on kernel functions?

Dear community,

we are currently working on implementing Screen Personas 3.0 SP1. After evaluation in a sandbox machine, we now plan to move to the official Dev / QA / Production landscape.

Based on previous upgrades and feature enhancements, we still have a slight concern that the Personas Addon could harm any of the existing ERP processes, resulting in dumps or other errors after installation (when using the normal SAP GUI 7.30). We'd like to avoid a full system regression test for time & resource constraints.

From the system architecture displayed here: Personas 3.0 Performance Optimization Guide - SAP Imagineering - SCN Wiki

I would conclude that personas is not tying in directly to the kernel processes, so the risk of such issues should be minimal?

Personas experts, could you please confirm / comment? If you have seen issues after the installation, which areas should we check before moving ahead? Thanks for your input.

Regards

Merten

While Personas itself is a separate component, it has a hook into the DYNP and depending on the system's basis support package stack, there may be a need to implement a so-called basis enablement note. This is necessary below basis 740 SP 08. Also, below SP 09, there is a note that must be applied to the system to update the correction workbench. If these notes are applied incorrectly or not at all, then there is a chance to get dumps. However if the installation guide is followed then this should not happen.

Other than this, Personas will not harm anything because it has no effect on any other code of any ERP business application area.

Hi Thomas, all,

thank you for the feedback.

We have Basis SP 10 so then even the enablement note will not be required.

Hello Merten,

The SAP Screen Personas 3.0 is a separate Software Component. It doesn't have kernel code, even though it depends on the ITS and the kernel to work.

If you face an issue while using Personas and the issue lies on the ITS, then it is highly possible that the solution will require a new kernel patch.

Hi Merten,

by now i didn't experience any problems with the installation of SAP Screen Personas and the existing erp processes. Due to the fact that by updating the kernel the checks for the addon in kernel functions are implemented anyway, there is no impact on other processes.

Your kernel already checks if the addon is installed or not when you are processing your erp applications, so it only takes effect if it is installed.

The risk should be minimal if at all.

Maybe there are more opinions or experiences on this topic, i didn't see any problems with the addon concerning ERP application behaviour as sap screen personas is installed as a separate addon.

Regards,

Christoph
