What is the difference between following 3 BO applications?

1. Web Intelligence HTML client (web);

2. Web Intelligence Applet interface (Rich Internet Application);

3. Web Intelligence Rich Client (desktop)

Till now I was under impression that there are only 2 ways to connect to web Intelligence, one is through BI Launch Pad and other one is Webi Rich Client which is offline mode. But after reading above 3 tools in one of the blog I am little confused. Thanks in advance.

Shweta,

Your understanding of ways to connect to web intelligence still holds good. The HTML and Applet modes are accessed through BI Launchpad.

The three web intelligence clients that you mentioned are ways to view or modify the webi report.

If you see the preferences for web intelligence in BI Launchpad and try checking each option. You will able to relate the article to the different modes.

some of the features like

Apply custom formats to numbers in tables

Data mode where you can see all the details about the dataproviders present in the report

are available in Applet mode.(all the features are listed in the article)

Applet mode is more of a web version of Rich client with some restrictions.

Hi,

Offline mode functionality is totally different to these mode.offline mode is specific to webi rich client only.You can connect Rich Client with different authentication like Enterprise/Windows AD etc.

These are mode related to reports viewing/refresh/create.like if you select  HTML mode from BI launch pad->preferences then report is going to open in web only.you can not change the data source of the webi query with this mode.

Change data source is available only with Rich client mode.

You will get more detail from this link.

Thanks Amit for quick response. I understand about Webi Rich Client and Webi HTML client.

But what about Web Intelligence Applet interface (Rich Internet Application). How does it differ from other 2 tools.

this is already explained in the previous link.

Webi HTML Interface

  • Best interface for report consumers who will mostly be running predesigned reports and doing only light modifications
  • The HTML interface utilizes the 64-bit backend servers but lacks some of the design capabilities of the Applet Interface

.

Webi Applet Interface

  • Best interface for report designers and power users who will be creating, modifying and doing advanced analysis of documents and data.
  • This interface takes advantage of 64-bit backend servers and can generally handle larger amounts of data/calculations as it utilizes backend servers to do the heavy lifting.
  • Since this is a Web Application, timeouts can occur when leaving the session idle or when carrying out long running actions.

.Webi Rich Client Interface

  • This stateless interface has almost all of the features and functionality that the Applet interface does plus a few additional features of its own.  This should be used by advanced designers and power users that wish to have a stable design environment for larger documents
  • Can be used with local data sources and some desktop type data sources such as Excel and Access
  • Also can be used in 3-tier mode which takes advantage of backend servers for data retrieval
