Parallel PI Systems With Upgrade

Hi Everyone

We are planning to upgrade a PI 7.30 system to PI 7.4 (PO) but would like to do a phased approach to mitigate any risks with cut over.

Essentially we would like to run the old PI system in parallel with the new PI system and move interfaces over at different intervals.

Is it possible to connect two different PI systems to your backend systems like ECC and BW and have them run simultaneously?

Regards

Riaz

Hi Riaz,

connecting multiple PI system from SAP system is possible. the connectivity between SAP and PI

1) IDOC communication - for outbound the port can be manage between two PI system. for inbound no need to change anything in SAP side.

2) Proxy communication - for inbound prod (to SAP) there is no change req. in SAP system. for outbound proxy you need to create Sender ID and maintain the config in SXMB_ADM. Refer the below blog

Hi Harish

Thank you that is a very interesting article.

Do you perhaps know what the recommended SAP best practice is for PI/PO upgrades? Do they recommend a 'big bang' approach or a phased approach or is it entirely up to the customer?

Hi Riaz,

This is purely depend on customers landscape. As a standard practice if no of interfaces are less (less then 500), then big bang approach will be good, but for bigger landscape which has more number of business critical integration phased approach is good. To minimize the risk.
