Question regarding display of fields description and variables

Hello Folks,

I have 2 questions.

1)  Either silly of me, but somehow I cannot see the descriptions of fields by default.  My idea was it should automatically come from the the standard tables, as I am using the standard tables for this view. But just in case I have also added labels.

2) Can I only put variable in the Semantic layer ? If that's the case does it means that the whole view will run and at last the filter will be applied.

Example- if I have 10000 unique material no and users pout variable for just 1, will the whole view will run and at the end the filter will be applied, Doesn't make any sense, I am definitely missing something.
