Hi Charan,

It is not mandatory to check logs regularly,But in case if we have any issues with our sap server then we have to check them regularly,in other word if we have any performance related issues with our server we have to monitor logs at regular interval of time,From this logs we can analyse the cause of issue And we can get a picture of issue,

SM21    os log

SLG1    Application log

SM58     RFC error logs

DB12     Backup logs

SPAM    in this traction we have an option to see tp logs and action logs of sp

SM37     we have an option to monitor job logs

From os level we can access log

support package error logs can be accessed from   <DIR_TRANS>/log/ directory : &   <DIR_TRANS>/tmp/ dir

OS logs can be viwed    usr/sap/sid/sys/logs or SAPMMC -> SAP Systems -> SID -> Syslog

Transport logs at os level ie /usr/sap/trans/log

Hi ,

Already James & Saharoon has replied to your question with suitable answers. Just to add some more points over here :

1. what are logs related to basis?

=> In layman language logs related to BASIS are those logs, which we use for system administration like dev_enqio* , dev_rd, dev_icm, dev_ms, sapstart.log , dev_w* etc. which you can find under /usr/sap/<SID>/<instance name>/work/ directory . Additionally ,you can view the error logs from SM21, SM59 (RFC logs), SM51 (work process logs- dev_w*) etc.

2. why do we need to check them regularly?

=> We generally checks the logs in depth if any issue appears in EWA report or any other DAILY CHECK report . Checing these logs help in finding the RCA of this issue.

3. how do they affect the system?

=> In case any issue comes, then it gets caught via logs , which may be the cause of any issues like ICM, network , HW failure.

Hope it would be helpful.

Nilutpal.

Hi Charan,

sm21 is the log for basis which you need to check regularly

If any issue occurs in sm21, you can check the detailed trace of dev_w* in ST11

ST22 is for reviewing system short dump.

Best regards,
James
