Hi Experts,
Can any one please explain about Master data and transaction data, Dimension and fact with example? Many thanks in advance.....!
Bala,
You can refer the DWH guide sent by Akhilesh. It contains description and details about all the DWH concepts which you need.
Master data- It refers to the information that is present in the system for its lifetime. It is where a reference and other derivations that a transactional data get its characteristics. Master data are the top level data cause systems requires it in order to run.
Transactional data- refers to the facts or encoded information during the transaction process.
E.g credit memo, invoice transaction are transactional data.
Vendor, Customer, GL Account creation is master data.
Master data is one time job.
In SAP Terms, using Vendor, Customer or GL Account in document is called Transaction data.
Transaction data is day to day job.
Dimensions describe the objects/entities involved in a business intelligence effort. While facts correspond to events, dimensions correspond to people, items, or other objects.
Fact tables contain the data corresponding to a particular business process. Each row represents a single event associated with that process and contains the measurement data associated with that event
For example, in the retail scenario purchases, returns and calls are facts. On the other hand, customers, employees, items and stores are dimensions and should be contained in dimension tables
