Opinion/strategy for patching/upgrade

Hi everyone,

We’re planning to patch/upgrade our SAP systems, and are currently reviewing some strategies.

This is what our systems look like at the moment.

ECC – NW7.0 Ehp2 SP 6 with ECC6 Ehp5 SP3

CRM, BI, EP – NW7.0 Ehp1 SP 7

PI – NW7.1 Ehp1 SP 5

Solman – NW7.1 SP12

The following are some of the options we’re considering:-

Option 1

Patch the systems to the minimum support packages so that SAP can

support us on any IE related issues

Option 2

Patch the systems to the latest support packages

Option 3

Full blown upgrade to 7.3 or 7.4 for all systems

Option 4

Partial upgrade of specific systems (PI, BI, EP) to 7.3 or 7.4 first,

then the other will follow on a later stage

Would be great if we could get your opinion/feedback on the options?

Especially any issues or limitations with the options?

Also is it advisable to patch the systems one at a time, e.g. starting with PI first, then maybe BI, then Portal etc etc

Do you think this will impact any dependencies between the systems?

Hello Kaet,

You can proceed with option3 full blown upgrade for all the system so that you will get latest functionalities.

ECC – NW7.0 Ehp2 SP 6 with ECC6 Ehp5 SP3 - second system need to be upgraded

CRM, BI, EP – NW7.0 Ehp1 SP 7 - Last option to do the upgrade

PI – NW7.1 Ehp1 SP 5 - First system(Always PI has to be at latest level)

Solman – NW7.1 SP12 - Already latest

Hi Raja,

If option 3 was not possible, would option 2 be sufficient?

Also, have you patch one system at a time before?

For example, start with PI, then EP a few weeks later, and maybe CRM later etc etc

Yes you can proceed with one system at a time. But do it in sandbox and check everything is fine before touching the actual landscape.
