how can I display the value of a filter as a text in a text canvas?

You can add an extra text component on top of your dashboard pointing on an excel cell containing the month selected
Can you elaborate me the scenario in detail, so that we can help you in clear.
after selecting a value for month and year the dashboard is showing some measures:
2014 2013
sales ..... ......
costs ..... ......
now i want to display the selected month in the filter like this:
april 2014 2013
Obviously, if you have used a filter or a prompt to control the report. Take those destination values in a text component to display them. Still if you find difficulties in achieving this, please let me know the hurdle.
