Hello Praveen,

There are differences between SWPM and SUM tool.

SWPM is used to perform system copy of an existing system. This system copy can be Homogeneous (when target system will be in the same operating system and database) or Heterogeneous (when target system will be in a different operating system and/or database).

The system copy done by SWPM does not change the system version, it will be an exactly copy from the source system, but you will could move it to another host, change the operating system or database from your system.

For instance:

Souce system is a SAP ERP 6.07 on Windows and Oracle.
Target system will be a SAP ERP 6.07 on Linux and HANA.

SUM tool is used for upgrade. You are going to be upgrading the system to another version and during the process, you can also migrate the database to HANA.

For instance:
Souce system is a SAP ERP 6.0 on Windows and Oracle.

Target system will be a SAP ERP 6.07 on Windows and HANA.

The operating system cannot be changed during the upgrade. Also, the migration with SUM can only be from any database to HANA.

If you want to run an upgrade and also migrate the database to HANA, you must use SUM tool.
You can also run the upgrade with SUM without changing the database and run a System Copy with SWPM to migrate to HANA afterwards. It is up to you, depending of your business needs.

However, if you only want to migrate your system to a new environment, but the version will be the same, then you must use SWPM tool.
