Upgrade, Split and Migration on Netweaver 7.0 System

Hi All,

We are planning to perform Upgrade and Migration on our Netweaver 7.0 dual stack system.

Target Release is Netweaver 7.4.

As SAP does not recommend to perform Upgrade to Netweaver 7.40 with dual stack So we will perform Java Stack Split also.

Migration will be performed from Unix to Linux.

Now I am just thinking in what sequence we should execute these activities.

Stack definitely should be splitted before Upgrade but Should we perform migration as first step or after the upgrade.

SAP also suggests to upgrade after a week of migration So should we perform migration at last.

Please provide your views for best approach in this scenario.

Regards,

Shivam

HI Shivam,

You have a dual stac system. Question here is - after splitting do you need the java stack?

if not then split the system on sourc and then peefirm an OS migration of ABAP. Once that is done - do it for all systems as well. Once your migration is successful decide on the upgrade strategy- refer SUM and DB notes with upgrade guide. Perform it again in same manner as you did your migratio - starting with sandbox to production.

If you want to perfom migration of both and want to keep them on same host - you can migrate as suggestwe above.

If you want to migrate them on 2 different hosts- then split first.

for all possibilities- refer PAM, notes and guides.

Hi All,

I was reading Dual stack split guide which says -

"Migration of OS and database platform during the split is not supported"

Do you think we can perform split and migration together and if no then we should first perform split->then upgrade and then migration because After upgrade we will have netweaver 7.4 which has several new migration related functionalities.

Hi Shivam,

Yes during split migration of OS/DB is not supported. But i will take different approach on the sequence. Perform the upgrade in the target landscape.

1. Migration of OS

2. Dual stack Split

3. Perform the upgrade

Hi Shivam,

The migration of the operating system or the database platform during the split is not supported

You are correct, you cannot migrate the OS or DB during the split.

As I said above - you should 1s split the system and the migrate if you do not want to use the JAVA part - that saves you system cost and keep the target clean.

If you are running on 32 bit machine currently- and your target is 64 bit - then you have to 1st migrate and split and then upgrade.

If you want to keep the ABAP and JAVA system on different host - then split 1st and the migrate and then upgrade.

You can refer the guide and central note for dual stack split.

Hi Shivam,

Perform an export and then while importing do the split. so that two things can get completed as same time and then you can think on upgrade.

Hi Sharma

1. Migrate the system from Unix to Linux with same version, During this process you can split ABAP & Java two different SID but the DB same.(Dual stack split)

Refer the System copy guide -https://service.sap.com/guidefinder - Select the OS /DB & sap version

2. After migrated to new OS, Integrate with Solution Manager for MOPZ calculation. Just wait for 2 to 4 week time

3.  Start the NW upgrade to NW 7.4, before that refer the Upgrade guide https://service.sap.com/guidefinder - Select the OS /DB & sap version.
