EAI is Enterprise Application Integration which involves the communication betweens many systems/applicaions in different programming languages , different formats,different vendors . They are integrated in such a way that they can communicate with each other without knowing about the processes involved in doing the same.
The entity which facilates this is called an integrator or integration borker and XI is one such Integration Broker provided by SAP.
