Apply support pack and kernel update on AIX cluster

Gurus,

How do you apply support pack and kernel on AIX ECC cluster ?

DB is running on one node and CI is running on other node.

Do we need to do switchover before applying kernel ?

Hi rkandy,

Support pack are applied using SDM or JSPM for the Java Stack. As far as the ABAP stack is concerned SPAM is the tool for support packages and SAINT for the Add-on components.

For you to use your SPAM some initial configurations are required like your STMS must be configured, addresses. do postinstallation check via se06. and also import your profiles. It always recommended to run your SGEN before patching hence helpful to reduce time.

Kernel can be patched again using JSPM.

Else you need to stop your DB and the instance. Login using sidadm unsar your kernel files at some location properly, and then replace the kernel files at location /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run and then restart the cluster and the DB. ALso ensure you have the back up of the run folder with you so as to revert back incase of any issues while upgrading the kernel.
