Storage based Backup for SAP HANA with MDC

Hi

We are in the process of evaluation of SAP HANA(SPS09).

From the implementation partner we got an architecture of ECC and CRM in one HANA box as MDC (Dev, QA and Prod). The sizing for the landscapes are done accordingly.

As per the sizing, the Production box is with 2TB of RAM. The backup architecture for production is suggested as Storage based backup to reduce the network load and improve performance.

Now, the query is, since the architecture is MDC for ECC and CRM, if it is required to perform a QA refresh activity only for ECC or CRM, will it be possible using this storage based backup?

Or, in a more general way, is it possible to restore/recover only single system when backup is (storage based / MDC) taken using storage snap?

Hi Sudip,

Based on your comments looks like you are opting for a Storage based backup that directly backs up the files from the data directories

Have you already checked with SAP if such a backup/recovery procedure is supported in the first place?

There are multiple options to take HANA system backups such as Native backups and Backint backups(3rd party SAP certified tools) and they offer options for easier maintenance of backup files and help achieve a POINT IN TIME restore of HANA systems

So I think you should consider checking if the Storage backups are supported to start with and then elaborate further to test the solution before it is implemented(such as Point in Time recovery) if it is a critical HANA System

If you think some points are not clear, please provide more details on your setup which can help us understand the scenario better

Hi Sunil

With SPS07 (SAP Note 2039883), SAP HANA Supports Storage snapshots. Yes, the need is fast data backup and quick restoration for the large volume of data so that QA refresh etc. activities are possible smoothly.

My confusion is, Storage Snapshot  - not possible for MDC scenarios. Is this understanding correct?

Ok I understand it better so you are referring to SAP HANA Storage snapshot and not to any third party hardware storage snapshot

Yes HANA Storage snapshot is available from SPS07

Yes Backup and recovery using Snapshots is not yet supported for MDC refer the note 2096000- SAP HANA Multitenant Database containers- Additional information
