Hi guys,
I have a customer that wants to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 to 2014, they have ECC 6.0 (No EHP) with Kernel 7.21 REL 64 Bits in Windows Server 2003.
Obviously they need to upgrade to Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 but then i have some doubts about the procedure to do the migration, what would be the ideal method for this?:
This is my second time working with SQL, so this is why i have these doubts.
Thanks in advance for your insight and tips on this issue.

Hi Martim
You have to follow the three steps install & upgrade the MS Sql DB from 2005 to 2014.
1. Before starting the option 1, you have to check the current Support package level (Basis & BW) in your source system(On Windows 2003 with MS Sql 2005). if its low do the SP upgrade to level 30 stack.
2. Start the Option 1 Homogeneous system copy to Windows 2012 / Sql 2012 R2
3. Upgrade the MS Sql DB from 2012 to 2014, Refer the SAP Note
1966701 - Setting up Microsoft SQL Server 2014

Hi Martim,
I would go with 1. In addition to Matt suggestions (which I would also follow), you might want to check the following note to check the minimum SAP_BASIS requirements for SQL Server 2014, which you have to accomplish before upgrading the database or perform the system copy to the target with this database version:
In addition, if your customer acquired SQL Server from SAP and wants to download the media, check out the following document for instructions on how to have access to the download media:

I would go with option 1. Do a fresh install of Windows 2012 R2 and SQL 2014, then do a system copy from the source system to the target system with SWPM (which will install the 7.42 kernel at the same time on the target). There is no point to installing a whole ECC system just to overwrite the database.
There are some minimum Basis SP requirements for SQL 2014, so make sure that the source system meets these requirements before doing the system copy.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Martim,
You could opt option 2
Do a fresh installation with SWPM of ECC 6.0 on Win 2012/2012R2 with SQL Server 2014 and then restore source DB.
In addition option 1 is also applicable here to achieve the desired up gradation.
