Hi,

Making a  Database backup is the best choice but you can also from your current version, in Designer export the entire repo to ATL file format.

The file can be  restored properly by importing the ATL into a similar version of the repo and later. The repo can later be upgraded using the repository Manager  tool.

I think You can for Database base back up ( use increment approach )
