IMHO, posting external links in SCN is fine as long as it does not violate the , i.e. don't post links to advertise your own company/products.
We do post external links to Wikipedia, Stack overflow, and other technical websites now and then. It so happens that I recognize the image you posted to be from another SCN member's website. You could have posted that image and also provided the link to the site to give credits to the owner of the content.
It's just that this is a professional forum, and it's common etiquette that we acknowledge the source of content if it's not our own. Hope that is fine.
