SWDC and available KERNEL components 7.21 <=> 7.41

what about the (red marked) missing software-components within Kernel_7.41 download areas ?

i compared all available downloads (on may, 07  2015)

in Kernel_7.41 - why are these components missing in Kernel 7.41 downloads ?

should customer use older components from Kernel 7.21 or 7.20_EXT ? - or are these separate downloads now obsolete ?

what about SAPSLDREG

what about SNMPLIB

what about MDX

what about SAPEVT

what about SAPKPROTP

what about SAPLICENSE

what about SAPPFPAR

what about SAPROUTER

what about SAPXPG

Hi Christoph,

first of all, I do hope, that you know, that you cannot switch from 7.21 to 7.4x - this comes automatically with the upgrade to EHP7 (Basis 7.40). This 7.4x Kernel is NOT downward compatible.

But, if you upgrade to 7.4x, you have to do this ...

As I do expect, that you want to include latest basis patches, you HAVE to use 7.42 anyway ...

For snmplib, I'm not sure, but this one isn't supported on iSeries anyway ...

But: The other ones are ONLY showing up in the patches, when they really got changed ...

=> e.g. SAPROUTER : If this is missing, it didn't get changed within 7.41 time ...

All of them (perhaps except snmplib) are part of SAPEXE or SAPEXEDB. So, there is no need to patch all of them ...

we are on ECC-617 SP02 with NW-740 SP04 and Kernel 7.40 PL-060,

and we want to update the kernel, so i think Kernel 7.41 is a good choice,

for this time,

and Kernel 7.41 is DKK to 7.40-SP04 (down to 7.40-SP02)

maybe later we are going to upgrade SPS, but not now.

as i know about Kernel 7.42 this is only starting from ECC-617 SP08 ???

if all (not found as separate download) mentioned components are already included in SAPEXE or SAPEXEDB,

that will be o.k. -

but SAP is very good in confusing customers.

Thanks.

Hi Christoph,

as of SP8, 7.42 is a requirement.

Currently, note 1969546 is not available. I do not know, when it will become officially downward compatible, but we used it at several customers already. As this happens in the next weeks anyway - even for your SP-level, we would rather go to 7.42 than to the outdated 7.41.

Especially, as 7.42 has several performance enhancements "active by default" already, that need to be turned on in 7.41.

thanks, Volker,

o.k. - apparently the kernel 7.42 could be used down to NW-7.40 SP02

=> http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/2128122

and

=> http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/2083594

in sapnote http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1969546

i could not find something about 7.42 DCC for NW-740 ?

we are on IBM-i/OS V7R1 TR7,  is this o.k. for kernel 7.42 ?

Hi Christoph,

yes, 7.1 is required ... TR7 is old, but in general ok for this.

one more question,

=> http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/2128122

is a separate ASCS instance mandatory, before update to kernel 742 ?

Hi Christoph,

no, a separate ASCS instance is not required before updating the kernel to 7.42.

In our CRM landscape all three systems (DEV-QAS-PRD) are running as single instance systems.

For more information please read these SAP notes as well:

2098347 - IBM i: Upgrade to SAP_BASIS 7.40 or SAP NetWeaver kernel 7.4x

2013043 - Performance Problems with Enqueue Work Process

At least I will test the migration to add an ASCS instance on our test system in a few weeks.

Hope this helps,

Rüdiger

Hi,

no, it is just for LARGE systems - and then for all 7.4x kernels ...

Dear Cristoph,

I was curious too so I have downloaded Kernel 7.41/100 and took a look.

The missing programs (SAPPFPAR, SAPLICENSE, etc.) are in the SAPEXE.SAR file.

To be more precise, they are in the folder DATA_UNITS -> K_741_U_OS400_PPC64 -> DBINDEP -> SAPEXE.SAR . (I didn't check all missing programs, so some of the are possible in another directory, but most of them are here.)

Best regards,

Laszlo

Hi Christoph

I think you can check with SAP Support team. For any development in IBM-i will be last action.

my recommendation better you can keep the IBM-i on Kernel release on either 7.21 or 7.40(Not on 7.41 and above.)

Kindly refer the SAP Note

68440 - IBM i: How do I upgrade to a later OS release?
