HANA DB Upgrade path

Hi,

Currently our HANA DB is with Revision 85.0.

We want to upgrade the DB to 94. As per the information provided in the 1948334 we can update the DB from 85.1 & 85.2 to 94.

Wanted to know whether DB Update path from 85.0 to 85.1or85.2 and update to 94 is mandatory or can we update it from 85.0 to 94.

We do not have any such limitations with the upgrade any time

We should be able to move from 85.0 to 94 without any concerns

But please chec note 2148218: SAP HANA Database inconsistent MVCC information causes Indexserver crash during startup

Looks like we have some ongoing issue with versions 90,91, 92 93 and 94

We are looking forward to 95 release in the next few weeks to ensure the fix is in place

My straight question.

1) Can we update from 85.0 to 94

2) Can we update from 82.0 to 94.

For yes/no any SAP Note would be great.

Please refer the below SAP note for HANA Database update paths. You will notice below caution statements from SAP for incompatibilities for maintenance revision updates from 85.XX to SPS09

SAP does not mention 85.0 or 82.0 so ideally updates from these versions to 94 should work

If you really need an official answer please open a SAP support case and get a confirmation from SAP

1948334 - SAP HANA Database Update Paths for Maintenance Revisions

An upgrade from maintenance revision 85.01 to SP revision 90.00 or 91.00 (SPS 09) will not be possible due to the incompatibility of these versions.

An upgrade from maintenance revision 85.03 to SP revision 94.00 will not be possible due to the incompatibility of these versions.

Rev 85 to Rev 94 can be done - i am not able to find any note around this but i have tried it and it works.

Hi,

Post confirmation from OSS, I did DB Upgrades with 2 different versions.

82.0 to 95 (Directly)

85.0 to 95 (Directly).

Both the upgrades were successful.

Question 1) The note 2148769 does not provide the information about software

"Debug Symbol Package for SAP HANA Rev 95" & its importance.

Answer : In regards to debug symbols, they are shipped with the HANA revision.

We do not recommend our customers to perform debugging on their own as

it could bring their system to an undefined state. This should only be

done by SAP HANA development side. For more information, you may refer

to note 2145573. In the SAP note 2148769, it shows you what bugs have

been fixed. If you were encountering a bug before and want to confirm

if it has been fixed in rev 95, you can check this note 2148769.

Question 2) Can we upgrade the DB from 82.0 or 85.0 to 94 directly in single step.

Answer: If the upgrade is for a production system, then we recommend our

customer to stay on SPS8 maintenance revision before the next SAP HANA

Datacenter Service Point is reached for SP09. For more information,

you may refer to SAP HANA Release and Revision Strategy, slide 9. If

it's for a non-production environment, you are recommended to upgrade

to the latest revision which is rev 95. You may directly upgrade to

rev 95 as it doesn't mention in note 1948334 of any incompatibility.

3) As of now Statistics service is separate and not embedded. With

HANA DB Upgrade to 94 or 95 whether update tool would take care of

make the statistics service embedded or do we need to do that activity

before the update to Rev 94 or 95.

As of revision 93, the Embedded Statistics is the default setting.

Please refer to note 2091313 for more information.

NOTE: Above suggestions was around 20 days back old and specific with Revision 95, and currently with change in HANA Revision and its related notes, things might have been changed, please do check again thoroughly before proceeding for patch update in test environment.

Hi Santosh,

as I read the note (it is a bit confusing) it contains restrictions that certain combinations are not possible.

As there is no restriction listed coming from 85.0 you should be able to go to any SPS 9 revision directly.

Just the way I read it.
