The link you have fully explains everything. Only thing to work about NOT to Audit too much it will slow down the complete work flow process for the users. If you set it too high the delay is due to every move being written and checked prior to the users doing the workflow.
Keep the settings at default. Also check you Audit database has plenty of overhead.
