Can I take Offline Backup in HANA?

Hello everyone,

Can I take offline Backup in HANA?

If NO, can you tell me which guide or SAP Note says?

Background;

I have two HANA systems with System Replication.

For our cusotmer's business request, I have to take backup on the secondary daily.

However, system replication feature cannot allow me to take backup on the sedondary.

So, I'm planning to take offline backup (data file backup) on the secondary.

Is it possible? Can SAP support?

If NO, can you tell me which guide or SAP note says?

I checked some guides and notes, but I cannot find.

Regards,

Noriko Shibuya

Hi Noriko,

for what purpose do you want to take an offline backup?

Is it, because you want to backup just the plain data/log files with file backup methods?

Or maybe because of creating a snapshot on your storage system and having the data files in a consistent state?

I agree with Ning and Ruaidhri - the 'real' HANA based backup is only possible online.

You have to see it like - the HANA extracts all the data via the HANA application layer - for this of course, the HANA has to be up and running.

Hello Noriko,

According to note 1642148 - FAQ: SAP HANA Database Backup & Recovery

3. Do I have to stop the SAP HANA database for backup?

No.

Data and log areas can only be backed up when the SAP HANA database is online. During data and log backup, the system is available as usual.

And it also says that:

Backups are performed while the database is running. The impact of backups on system performance is negligible, and users can continue to work normally while the backup is running.

As per note 1999880 - FAQ: SAP HANA System Replication

9. Is it possible to take backups on the secondary side?

No, currently you can only take data and log backups on the primary side.

If automatic log backup is enabled, after takeover to the secondary side the log backups will automatically be written there.

If the above statements give you the answers, please close this thread.
