SAPS to CPU conversion for AIX 6.1 server (Power 7)

We are planning to install addons in our existing Netweaver system. The app servers & db servers require uplift based on the sizing. The sizing for CPU is in SAPS. How do we convert it to number of CPUs.

Server is AIX 6.1 (Power 7).

Currently the app server CPUs are as below

Online Virtual CPUs                        : 12

Maximum Virtual CPUs                       : 12

Minimum Virtual CPUs                       : 1

Maximum Physical CPUs in system            : 128

Active Physical CPUs in system             : 73

Active CPUs in Pool                        : 73

Shared Physical CPUs in system             : 73

Physical CPU Percentage                    : 20.00%

Desired Virtual CPUs                       : 12

How do we convert the number of SAPS to CPUs or cores?

Hello ,

CPU calculation is completely based on Hardware. Like IBM P5 to P8 all SAPS calculation speed is different. HP hardware / Fujitsu Hardware SAPS calculations based on CPU's are different.

If you want to upgrade only Support Packs on your running system, then no need to increase  the SAPS and CPU as of now. Just add RAM on your server.

If you want to plan any version Upgrade / EHP Upgrade then definitely you need to calculate the server sizing through SAP - Quick Sizer tool and calculate the SAPS / Memory and I/Os.

As a Basic Example we can say that 1 CPU for P7 IBM Power servers supports 20000 SAPS.

Share this result with your hardware vendor , they will guide you the exact CPU requirement for your business.

Hi

You have to check with IBM and as well SAP vendors. from SAP you can use the quick sizer tool and IBM power system they may have tool to calculate the current and over all requirements

Hello,

Your hardware vendor should be able to convert this for you as this conversion will be based on CPU type, clock rate etc.
